Small Town Simple

The Simplicity Adventures of a Mother and Daughter

A Clean Table

The dining room table has a tendency to become the catchall for clutter in a home.  It’s where the mail is left, it’s where homework is worked on, it’s where craft projects sit for days (or longer) at a time.  It seems like a simple thing, but the clutter of everyday life creeps in and all of a sudden there is no room at the table.

The dining room table is more than just a place to sit down and eat.  It is a place to gather and to converse.  It’s where we discuss our opinions and learn about one another.  It’s where we share stories from our day and reflect on the good or the bad.

Before so much advanced technology, this is what families did.  They made a point to sit down at this table with one another and share a meal.  There were no cell phone interruptions and there were no television shows to watch.

It’s a personal goal of mine to bring this tradition back to my family and myself.

My action steps:

  • Spend 10 minutes each night this week cleaning off the table
  • Be proactive: find a place for an item before it finds its way to the table
  • Sometimes things will still land on the table.  Spend a few minutes every night putting those items away.

Too many meals are spent in a rush or not at the table at all.  I hope to try to clear off the clutter and allow our table to serve its purpose: to bring my family together to enjoy each other’s company.

How do you keep your clutter away from your dining table?  I would love to hear any and all suggestions!
