DIY Project: Use What You Have

We are working on tackling little DIY projects throughout the year and a big theme for our projects is to use items we have.  The basket?  A former catch-all for some books.  Today?  An herb garden, sitting in a sunny window in Carolyn’s apartment.  The steps were simple:

  1. one basketBasket
  2. one can of paint – we used Valspar’s primer and paint in one (We chose a pale green for a nice juxtaposition against the deeper green of the herbs)Basket2 Basket3
  3. a measurement of the interior so the correct size of pots was purchasedBasket
  4. basil, thyme and oreganoBasket
  5. plant and enjoyBasket

This DIY project took less than an hour to complete, including a run to Lowe’s for the paint, plants and pots.  The real plan is to have enough fresh herbs for the spring and summer and then to dry any excess for next fall and winter.  It is simple and economical.  So, the next time you want a small change, poke around your home and see what can be converted to a new use.  There is something satisfying about watching the conversion from one use to another and an even deeper satisfaction knowing that another purchase didn’t find its way into our homes.
