We are avid readers here at Small Town Simple and we love to discuss our current books: good, bad, and everything in between.  Put us in the middle of a bookstore and we will find something that we need to read.  We want to create a discussion with our readers about our latest books, so feel free to join the conversation.  Oh and our interests pretty much run the gamut, so don’t hold back on any possible suggestions.

I am currently reading the Emperor Series by Conn Iggulden about Julius Caesar.  I have a tendency to pick and choose periods of history that I find interesting and the Romans are definitely one of them.  Right now, I am deep into the 3rd book, Emperor: The Field of Swords: A Novel of Julius Caesar.  There are 5 total books in this series.  They are historical fiction, so the majority of the information is accurate however, some parts of history are embellished or omitted for the purpose of the story.

If you love stories of drama, action and a little romance then these books cover all of those subjects.  Conn is an excellent story teller and I have a newfound respect for Caesar’s ambition throughout his life.  Conn also develops an extremely charismatic character that you want to see rise up each time the harsh realities of Rome knock him down.  I completely devoured the first two books, taking them with me everywhere in case I had a free moment.

I highly recommend these books if you are looking for something entertaining as well as informative about the period.  I also recommend these for the male reader in your life.  There are vivid battle scenes, sword tournaments, pirates and vicious politics of the period throughout every novel.  These books will remain on our bookshelves so that one day I hope Tater Tot will enjoy them as much as I have.

What books are you enjoying lately?  What subjects do you most enjoy reading about?

xo, Lauren
