The Simplicity Adventures of a Mother and Daughter

Lovely Winter

WinterWinter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:  it is the time for home.”  Edith Sitwell

It is January.  The first month of the new year.  When the slate has been wiped clean and we are ready to start fresh, to be new.  It is also the time of year when the days are short, the sun doesn’t shine so bright, when the air can be so cold it almost hurts.  And what do we find ourselves wishing for?  Spring!

But before we fast forward to that spectacular time of year, this is a wonderful season to pause and enjoy what this cold,  sometimes dreary season can actually offer.  Inside these 3 months we have:

  • a lovely quiet that winter offers up – as if all that surrounds us has gone to sleep
  • a cozy time to snuggle under covers – by yourself with a good book and a hot cup of cocoa or with your loved ones, doing…whatever.
  • an opportunity to try different teas or coffees because it is just plain fun
  • a chance to play games – board games, card games, puzzles – a wonderful exercise for our brains
  • time for firelight and candlelight which makes us glow

In other words, winter is a wonderful season that offers many reasons for us to embrace it.  The starkness, the stillness and the simplicity of the  season can be daunting at times.  But it does have its own inherent beauty, a loveliness that the other seasons can’t duplicate.  So we shall bundle up and go forth, seeking out the beauty of the season instead of cursing the cold.  We will be very present in…winter.
