The Rhythm of Winter

Small Town Simple

“Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.”  Henry David Thoreau

I strive not to rush my days.  Nor to wish my life away.  I want to enjoy all that winter provides.  It is the season to hibernate, to tuck in, to regroup.  It is a time for hot drinks, good books, long conversations and warm blankets.

The television is quiet and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons fills my space.  There is a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be finished.  (I’m down to the hard part – all the pieces look alike!) A mug is full & steaming and I feel contentment.

Sunshine is short.  Some days reflect a blue sky with a bright yet weak sunlight.  Others are gray.  It would be easy to use words such as dreary or melancholy.  But that doesn’t allow me to really feel the season – this period made for dormancy.  Instead I take that deep breath, I feel the cold and embrace it.  It is simply – winter.
